The World Record

February 6, 2000. San Diego, CA. Powell Skateboard’s, Danny Wainwright set the current High Ollie record at 44.5". The record still stands today. In celebration of this eight year old record, we would like to help you hold your own Powell/Danny Wainwright High Ollie Challenge this summer.

The Ollie Bar

The Ollie Bar is simple in design and is primarily comprised of PVC pipe, a few T-Joints, and a mess of screws. It is a slip together design and parts are as close as your local hardware store.

Here is a list of the parts you will need:

  • (1) 46" plastic rebar (the actually bar you ollie over)
  • (1) 42" PVC (main horizontal support)
  • (2) 34" PVC
  • (2) 4 1/2" PVC
  • (4) 1 1/2" PVC T-joints
  • (4) 10" PVC
  • (6) 1 1/2" end caps
  • 80 Screws

The main horizontal support pipe is 9" off the ground and will serve as the first height skaters need to ollie in order to be involved in the contest.

Please make sure to raise the bar all the way to the top rung at the end of the contest to show just how high Danny Wainwright’s World Record Ollie is… it will blow you and the skaters away!

Instructions

View the four minute step by step process in quicktime.

The actual set up of the ollie bar is pretty easy and can be completed in a few short steps.

  1. Lay the (2) 34" PVC on the ground, place end caps on each pipe. Measure 1 1/2" from the end with out the cap and then put a screw every inch up the pipe until you get to the end cap. Keep it straight. Place T-Joints on the ground with the Screw Rungs facing up.
  2. Place end caps on each 10" PVC
  3. Attach the 4 1/2" PVC to each secured T Joint
  4. Attach a T Joint to each 4 1/2" PVC
  5. Connect the assembled sides together with the 42" PVC using the upper T-Joints
  6. Slide (2) 10" feet into one side of the T Joints
  7. Now stand the bar up and slide the other (2) 10" feet into the T-Joints to complete the support feet
  8. Place 46" Rebar bar on lowest rung and start snapping some ollies.

The 42" Horizontal support pipe was designed as a break-away piece just in case any campers can’t quite make it over the bar, so please keep this feeling loose.

You will want to use a rubber mallet but be gentle, to ensure each PVC Support Foot is secured into the T-Joints.

If you would like you can glue the pipes together but don’t glue the 42" horizontal bar.

How to hold the Challenge

You need a piece of paper to list the skaters that will be involved in the challenge. In order to keep interest, make any skater that wants to sign up ollie a skateboard laid on its side. If they can pull that, they are in.

Each skater gets two tries at each height. Failure to clear the height eliminates them. Raise the bar after all skaters have cleared the height or are eliminated. When you get down to the last five, they get three tries. Having a commentator/announcer keeps things rolling along. No foot drags. Must roll away. In the event of a tie, play SKATE to decide the winner.

Have fun!
